“Why donkeys look like donkeys”, I always wondered 🤔.
“What kind of question is this”, they also wondered whenever I asked ‘why donkeys look like donkeys’ 🤔.
Though donkeys were not a common sight around my home; however, there used to be many on the way to our hometown during the train journey. With their heads lowered, eyes almost closed, looking as dumb as…
I do not wanna sound defamatory.
However, everybody knows that donkeys are accused of stupidity.
I was wondering why 🤔.
Are they really unintelligent?
When I tried to find out interestingly there were many compelling facts and theories. Though many were quite contradictory to each other, the one I liked most was that silences the debate ‘why donkeys do not use their brain’.
Well, donkeys come under the type of animals who don’t really have to use their brains a lot.
They don’t hunt like lions, don’t demand like cats. They eat what they are given, drink what they are provided with, hardly rebel against master. They fulfill their job of lifting the weight until death. The theory also says that donkeys don’t really know that they are about to die. They just do their work. For no reason.
Well, there is a reason why this theory strikes me the most.
A few days back I was reading about a verse from Surah Jumu’ah in Qur’an…
The likeness of those who were entrusted with the Tawrah, but did not carry it, is as the likeness of a donkey which carries huge burdens of books. How bad is the example of people who deny the Ayat of Allaah. And Allah does not guide the people who are wrongdoers. [Qur’an; 62:05]
Allaah the Exalted admonishes the Jews who were entrusted with the Tawrah and were ordered to abide by it. However, they did not abide by it, and this is why Allah resembled them to the donkey that carries volumes of books. Surely, when the donkey carries books, it will not understand what these books contain because it is only carrying these books using its strength.
This is the example of those who were entrusted with the Tawrah; they read its letter but did not understand its meanings nor abided by them. Rather, they even corrupted and changed the Tawrah. Therefore, they are worse than the donkey, because the donkey cannot understand. They, on the other hand, could have understood using their minds, but their minds were of no benefit. This is why Allah the Exalted said in another Ayah…
They are like cattle, nay even more astray; those! They are the heedless. [Qur’an; 7:179]
I was just wondering over this simile…
‘as fool as a donkey.’
Doesn’t it sound offensive?
Isn’t it quite derogatory?
I am just wondering if I am also carrying the same burden which I just carry but do not know ‘what’ and ‘why’.
Do I read simply the letters of Qur’an?
Do I know what Qur’an says?
Do I really see it as the Book of guidance?
Am I trying to follow it?
Is there any difference in me and those who were entrusted with the Tawrah; they read its letter but did not understand its meanings nor abided by them?
I don’t know.
From the train window, I saw a donkey carrying a huge weight. He was simply fulfilling the job of lifting the weight until death. He doesn’t really know that he was about to die. He was just doing his work. For no reason.
And, he was looking just like a donkey 🤔.
