When The Water Burns

Feeling thirsty?
Drinking water?
What if your refreshing glass of water spontaneously bursts into the fire at your face?
Check Out…

A few days back, I was helping a class XI student with her chemistry chapter in school. I was explaining to her how the properties of substances change when they combine. The simplest example I could give her was of water. We all know water (H2O) is made up of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen. We also know that oxygen is essential for combustion and keeps a fire going after it has been ignited (that is why we fan the coals in barbeque).

If you have forgotten, let me remind you of the basic chemistry we studied in school that hydrogen is highly flammable when it reacts with oxygen. It is amazing that the one assists in the fire, and the other itself highly flammable; when they combine together give us water which we use to put out fires.
This is how the properties of substances change when they combine. Thus, you cannot burn pure water.

Hey, Wait.

Though this is not a chemistry class, let me tell you that it is possible to break down water again into its elemental hydrogen and oxygen when you put energy into it, as done in the laboratory. There will be a loud bang and a blue flame, being the mixture highly explosive with a sound not tolerable (ever heard about hydrogen bomb?)

Alhamdulillah! It needs a certain amount of energy to cause this to happen; otherwise, our refreshing glass of water might spontaneously bursts into the fire at our face.

You might be wondering why I am bothering you with so much of chemistry. Bear with me for a while, and know what happened next.

It so happened that somebody forwarded me recently a short video on WhatsApp regarding the physical changes that will take place spontaneously on doomsday. Though I knew it before, it made me jump out of my sofa, when it said, “that day water of oceans will split back into its elemental form”. Hardly a few days back when I was reading a verse from surah Al-Takwir in the Qur’an which says, “And when the seas are filled with flame [81: 6]”, a fleeting thought came in mind “but how can water burn”, and it just passed by thinking “He is powerful over everything”.

As I watched the video, every piece fitted itself into the big jigsaw puzzle.
I was in complete awe.

That day faith in my heart said to me, “He is powerful over everything”, and today it just grew even stronger. If we can make water molecule to split it into its elemental form in the lab by providing energy in form of electricity, the One who created water can split it spontaneously. The cool water flowing in oceans will split back into oxygen and hydrogen spontaneously that day, and the energy required for the reaction to happen will be just a ‘Be’ from my Lord, as He Himself mentions in Qur’an in surah Al-Baqarah:

Originator of the heavens and the earth. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is [Qur’an; 2: 117]

It was just a ‘Be’, and two highly explosive elements otherwise, united in submission for our service to quench our thirst. It will be just a ‘Be’ and the cooling water which turns off fire will itself turn into flames.
I was just thinking about the most impressive chemistry fire demonstrations ‘hydrogen balloon experiment’, “just a small party balloon and the bang sometimes not bearable”. Can we even imagine the explosion with an amount of hydrogen coming from water, which is 71% of earth surface?

The Inevitable Reality-What is the Inevitable Reality? And what can make you know what is the Inevitable Reality? [Qur’an; 69: 1-3]

I gazed out of the window. The seaside view always pleasant to eyes suddenly turned into a horrible sight. All I could see was a gigantic reservoir of fuel waiting for a ‘Be’ to explode, and I pulled the curtains back together.

Sisterly Yours
The Might of Pen
